How to Make Topiary Trees With Flowers

Making your own topiary trees at home requires few supplies and little expense, and allows you to create the exact look to match your home decor. The ancient art of making topiary trees dates back to the Egyptians and was typically done by trimming plants and shrubs into various shapes to decorate a landscape. Instructions

    • 1

Select a 4- to 6-inch clay flower pot and fill it with floral clay. Be sure the clay fits in the pot snugly and fills it to the very top edge.

    • 2

Insert an 8-inch stick into the center of the clay in the pot. Push the stick down at least 2 inches to secure.

    • 3

Soak a 4-inch floral foam ball in water for at least five minutes until it is completely saturated. Let excess water drain off by placing the foam ball on a dish drainer.

    • 4

Push the ball onto the end of the stick. Be careful the stick does not go through the top of the ball.

    • 5

Cut the stems of carnations (or other flowers of your choice) to approximately 2 inches long. Insert the stems of the flowers into the foam ball, covering it completely.

    • 6

Place Spanish moss over the top of the clay in the pot to cover. If desired, tie a ribbon around the top edge of the flower pot.
