How to Make a Fresh Flower Topiary

Nothing is prettier for showing off garden fresh flowers than a topiary you make yourself. Although topiaries can be purchased or made by florists, they are costly, and you are not in control of the final look. Make your own fresh flower topiary at home using fresh flowers from your garden or purchased at a farmer's market, a few basic craft supplies and a little imagination. You will have a crowd-pleasing decoration for your home, a wedding reception or any special event.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a clay flowerpot that is approximately 4 inches in diameter. Any size can be used depending how big or small you want the topiary to be.

    • 2

Fill the clay pot with floral clay, filling it all the way to the top. Insert a 10-inch wooden dowel into the center of the clay.

    • 3

Soak a 4-inch floral foam ball in water for about 5 minutes or until thoroughly saturated. Allow the excess water to drain off.

    • 4

Place the foam ball onto the end of the wooden dowel, being careful not to push too far down; the dowel should not come through the top of the ball.

    • 5

Select flowers with sturdy stems and flowers. Use carnations, baby roses or hydrangeas. Cut the flower stems to about 2 inches long.

    • 6

Insert the flower stems into the floral ball, covering it completely. Place the flowers close together, so none of the foam shows.

    • 7

Place craft moss over the clay in the flowerpot to cover. Tie two or three pieces of raffia around the flowerpot and tie into a bow in the front.
