Different Types of Flowers Used in a Single Flower Arrangement

Modern floral design often involves filling a vase or other container with greenery and a variety of flowers of different sizes. While this design style is appealing and beautiful, sometimes a single flower placed in a vase can make a lovely statement. Single flower arrangements make a nice addition to a small table such as a nightstand, or dinner table for two.
  1. Rose

    • One of the most common single flowers placed in a vase is a rose. A rose can be freshly cut from the garden or purchased from a florist. Roses are available in many different colors, such as red, orange, yellow, pink or white. Roses last about seven days in a single-flower arrangement if the water level in the vase is kept constant.

    Orchid

    • Orchids have several colorful flowers on one stem. The most common types used in a single-flower arrangement are Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis Orchids. When placed in a vase of water, a fresh Dendrobium or Phalaenopsis Orchid can last up to four weeks. They are available from florists, but may need to be specially ordered. Purchase orchids with as many flowers open along the stem as you can, because the rest of the blooms on the stem are not likely to open.

    Carnation

    • A single carnation is a long-lasting cut flower that continues to look good for up to 14 days when the stem end is placed in a vase of water. Carnations are available in nearly every color. If you need a special color of carnation that is not available for a single flower arrangement, a florist can use floral paint to easily color a white carnation to any color you wish. Carnations are a very inexpensive cut flower to purchase.

    Lily

    • Lilies can be added to a vase and used as a single-flower arrangement. For a long-lasting display, buy or cut the lily stem with one flower half open and one or two buds showing color. That way, the other buds will continue to open over a seven- to 10-day period. Some lilies, such as the Stargazer and Casa Blanca lilies, are large and very fragrant.

    Daisy

    • A simple daisy is a cheerful flower that evokes memories of spring. A single daisy flower arrangement can be placed in an area where there is little room for a floral arrangement, such as a hospital table or a powder room. A daisy can be expected to last about five days in a vase of water.
