Before you begin to decorate your home, look inward. Your house should reflect your life and personality, drawing inspiration from your own day to day activities. Whether you like the simple beauty of the natural world, the architectural look and clean lines of the modern urban environment or some other aesthetic, you can use that look to unify your home.
  1. Earthy Look

    • Draw inspiration from nature to give your home an earthy look. Midwest Living recommends painting in earth tones or soothing blue shades to evoke forests, water or sky. Use rustic wood or wicker furniture along with bamboo screens to give your house an elegant simplicity. If you do use upholstered furniture, find patterns with leaves, birds, dragonflies and other themes from the natural world. Use woven cotton, sisal, bamboo or hemp rugs to match your decor. Use items directly from the natural world such as conch shells, pine cones and dried flowers as accessories. Rustic earthenware pottery, paintings of natural landscapes and wooden other things that evoke nature will also enhance the look of your room.

    Black, White and Red

    • Use black to give your room a unique feel. Paint the walls matte black for a subdued look or glossy for a shiny, glamorous feel. Use white fixtures, white paint on the ceiling or white tiles on the floor to provide contrast and lighten the room. Mirrors or mirrored tiles on the wall will help to keep the room upbeat. For a really sexy feel, use red accent lights, vases or other decorations. Alternately, paint red squares on the walls to enhance the architectural feel of the room.

    Seasonal Decor

    • Seasonal decor is a great way to keep your house looking fresh and current all year long. HGTV recommends printing out a seasonal silhouette on low tack vinyl, cutting it out and attaching it to a wall for an original artwork. For example, you could have a silhouette of a pine tree with falling snowflakes pasted above it as a winter scene or a silhouette of a grinning pumpkin or scarecrow for fall. Use sheets, throw pillows, rugs and slip covers in the seasonal colors to create a radically different look each season without having to redesign your house.
