DIY Grapevine Swags

A grapevine swag is a simple decoration to make and costs very little. When purchased from a retailer, a decorated grapevine may cost around $50 or more, but a grapevine swag made from materials found around most households can cost nothing. Using materials from home is also a time saver, because it prevents a trip to the store. Grapevine swags are traditionally hung over doorways or windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 15 grapevines into approximately 3-foot branches with pruning shears. Wait until all the grapes have been harvested to keep from damaging the plant and losing grapes. Avoid trimming the curly tendrils off, as they add to the beauty of the swag.

    • 2

Bundle the grapevine branches together, one by one, arranging them in an irregular way to make the swag look natural.

    • 3

Wrap florist wire around the middle of the vines three times, and then cut the wire, leaving 6 inches of extra wire on each end. Twist the ends tightly together.

    • 4

Strip the plastic off the artificial flower stems with the wire stripper. This will allow you to attach the flowers to the swag.

    • 5

Slide each flower's wire stem through the middle of the grapevine swag, arranging the flowers as you slide the stems through.

    • 6

Gather the flower stem wires together at the back of the swag, and twist them together with the wires that hold the grapevines together.

    • 7

Bend the twisted wires to form a hook, and hang your swag from a nail on the wall.
