Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Duct Tape Roses

Duct tape is a fabriclike tape best known for its strength and super-sticky quality. Although the original purpose of duct tape was to repair items in a pinch, the tape has an almost cultlike following in the crafting community. You can fashion wallets, purses and even flowers out of this tape that comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. So, next time you want to dress up a table with a floral centerpiece, skip the floral shop and go straight to the adhesive section of the craft or hardware store for a couple rolls of duct tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip of green duct tape the same length as the wooden skewer. Lay the wooden skewer along one of the long edges of the sticky side of the duct tape, and then roll the wooden skewer up in the tape to create the stem.

    • 2

Cut a 2-inch strip of rose-color duct tape, and set it sticky-side up. Fold the left edge of the strip down diagonally, stopping when the top edge is 1/4 inch away from the right edge. Fold the right edge down diagonally until it is aligned with the folded down left edge. This creates a triangle with a sticky strip along the bottom.

    • 3

Roll the triangle around the top of the stem to create the center of the rose.

    • 4

Cut another 2-inch long strip of rose-colored duct tape, and repeat the same folding process to create the triangle with a strip of sticky. Roll this piece around the outside of the first piece you created. Keep repeating the same process with the rose-colored tape, placing each successive layer of petals slightly farther down the stem than the previous, until you have the size flower you want.

    • 5

Repeat the 2-inch strip process two more times with the green tape, wrapping the pieces around the base of the rose to make a smooth transition between the flower and the stem.
