Flowers for Altars

Altars date back to ancient times and are generally found in a house of worship, though occasionally a home will have an altar. Placed in the front of a sanctuary, an altar may have a beautiful floral display representing an offering to God. Whatever the purpose, a floral arrangement on the altar is common for weddings, funerals, and other religious services. The flowers can be purchased or from your garden. There are two things you need to consider when selecting flowers for an altar arrangement: altars are usually a distance from the congregation, so be sure to include large blooms that can be seen and admired from a distance, and, many altars are in areas that have low light. If this is the case, select white or light and bright colored flowers for your arrangement.
  1. Roses

    • According to All Events Adviser website, roses are the most popular cut flower, and this is particularly true when roses are used in an altar arrangement. Roses in an altar arrangement can have added meaning because of the symbolism different colors of roses represent. White roses symbolize purity, love, innocence, reverence, and loyalty. Joy and caring are conveyed with yellow roses, while red roses always represent love.

    Lilies

    • Lilies of any variety are ideal for altar flowers because of their symbolic meaning of pure love in the Christian faith. Lilies are beautiful, fragrant, bright, and exotic looking in a bouquet. Easter lilies, tiger lilies, Oriental lilies, and calla lilies are favorite varieties found in floral arrangements for altars.

    Carnations

    • Carnations have always been appealing to use in altar displays because carnations are inexpensively available year around and the flower is long lasting. Christian legend has carnations appearing on Earth as Jesus carried the cross. As Mary shed tears, the carnation grew where her tears fell. This legend makes carnations particularly significant for Christian altar arrangements.

    Seasonal

    • Using seasonal flowers in your altar arrangement is not only inexpensive, but celebrates the time of year. Spring flower arrangements with tulips, daffodils, and iris are bright and attractive. Snapdragons, daisies, gladiolus, roses and lilies are most beautiful during the summer months. When autumn comes, use chrysanthemums, sunflowers, daisies, and branches of colored leaves for a festive display.
