How to Craft Fabric Flowers

Odd scraps of fabric usually result from sewing projects. Throwing out such scraps is a waste of perfectly good fabric, as is buying large cuts of fabric for projects that only require a small bit. Use your old scraps of fabric to make simple fabric flowers. Use the flowers to embellish clothing, jewelry, hair accessories and purses.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-by-36-inch strip of fabric
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • 1/2-inch shank button

Instructions

    • 1

Fold 1/4 of an inch of fabric at one end of the strip toward the back of the fabric. Sew a small stitch with needle and thread to hold the fold in place.

    • 2

Sew a basting stitch along one of the long edges of the strip. Gather the fabric on the basting stitch thread by pulling the thread taut and pushing the fabric toward one end. Knot the thread and trim the extra length to hold the fabric in the gathered position.

    • 3

Wind the gathered fabric into a spiral shape, with the gathered edge of the fabric in the center of the spiral, to form a flower shape. Stitch the flower shape together on the underside of the flower with your needle and thread. Tie off the thread and trim the excess.

    • 4

Sew a 1/2-inch-wide shank button in the center of the flower with your needle and thread.
