How to Make Garden Tags for Vases

While flowers and plants in the garden can be labeled with shorter spikes or poles, vases need tall-standing tags for labeling. Garden tags and plant markers are available at many home improvement, hardware and garden supply stores, but finding one long enough for a vase narrows the selection. Make your own garden tags for vases with long wooden kitchen spoons to create custom designs that fit your home's decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand a wooden spoon lightly with fine grit sandpaper. This will remove any natural burs or rough spots and prepare the spoon for paint. If the spoon has been used previously to cook with, wash it thoroughly with grease-cutting dish soap before sanding it.

    • 2

Lay newspaper over your workspace to protect it, and lay the spoon on top of the paper. Spray the upturned side of the spoon with paint and allow to dry. Flip the spoon and spray paint the other side. Allow to dry.

    • 3

Paint the name of the flowers in your arrangement onto the bowl part of the spoon with a small paintbrush and a color of acrylic craft paint that contrasts with the spray paint. Use other colors or the same color to paint small patterns, images or designs onto the handle of the spoon. When dry, insert the handle of the spoon into the vase with your floral arrangement.
