Lay the ribbon out in front of you, horizontally oriented with the wrong side of the ribbon facing up if it is single-sided. Grosgrain ribbon is double-sided, satin ribbon comes in both a single-sided version and a double-sided version. The dull side of the ribbon is the wrong side.
Fold the right side of the ribbon down at a 90-degree angle 16 inches from the left end of the ribbon. The right edge of the ribbon is now at a 45-degree angle.
Roll the ribbon, starting on the right side at the very end where there is now a point formed by the fold. Roll the ribbon three to four times up along the 45-degree slant to form the bud for the center of the rose.
Fold the right end of the ribbon down at a 90-degree angle again; this puts the bud of your rose at the bottom of the 2 inches you folded down. Roll the ribbon up the slant again. Repeat this folding and rolling process until you have 2 inches of ribbon left.
Twist the last 2 inches of ribbon down so it comes together with the tail created by the first 2 inches you folded down. Use a few stitches with needle and thread to secure the two tails of ribbon together with a few tacking stitches.
Use hot glue to attach the ribbon roses to plastic, wood or metal items. Use needle and thread to sew the roses onto fabric items.
