How to Paint Flowers on Fabric

If you want to paint floral designs on a piece of fabric, it's important you know which techniques to use so the final product isn't too weighed down. It's also imperative the fabric is in the proper condition to be painted beforehand. The application process itself is very simple, however, and can be done to embellish pieces of clothing, curtains, decorative pillows and anything else covered in or made of fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the garment or fabric without using fabric softener, and allow it to air dry. This will ensure that the fabric will not shrink and pucker around the painted design after it's washed in the future. While you can paint on any fabric, fabric paint takes best to cotton and polyester blends.

    • 2

Lay the fabric out on a flat surface. Insert a piece of wax paper behind the area you wish to paint.

    • 3

Create a floral design with different colors of fabric paint. The paint comes in a container that already has an application tip, so you can apply it straight from the bottle. Draw the petals, leaves and stems using simple lines and shapes. If you're not confident in your freehand skills, use a stencil and fabric marker to create the design before going over it with the paint.

    • 4

Use a stiff paintbrush to spread colors to areas such as inside the petals of the flower. Don't spread the paint over too big of a surface, or else the fabric will be clunky and stiff after the paint has dried.

    • 5

Allow the paint to dry completely before using the fabric.
