Floral Design Information

Some people learn floral design skills for their personal use, such as a method for adorning their homes. Other people study floral design for a professional career working with flowers. The first recorded use of floral design was by the ancient Egyptians.
  1. Definition

    • Prince George's Community College describes floral design as "the art of using flowers and other materials found in nature (or silk facsimiles) to create a pleasing and balanced composition." Besides vase arrangements, wreaths, garlands, floral bows and bouquets all call on floral design skills.

    Elements

    • Designs require balance and proportion.

The basic elements of floral design, according to Rutgers' website, are a line created by a stem or single flowers placed in a line; a 3-D shape, such as a sphere or cube; use of space; and texture of the material composing the arrangement. Floral designs also follow the principals of focal point, balance, proportion and rhythm.

    Career Preparation

    • People interested in a floral design career can earn a certificate from a trade school or college. Good candidates for floral design certification love flowers, have an artistic sensibility and have a desire to relate to other people. Students should take both design and business classes.
