How to Make Fall Floral Designs

Make your own fall floral designs by incorporating the golds, reds and oranges found in the flowers and leaves of the autumn season. Combine the elements of nature, like gourds, pumpkins or acorns, with flowers or tree branches for an unusual and attractive display. Determine the location for your design, as a dining table display requires a different arrangement than a living room display. Choose a container and then decide if you want an elaborate or simple display, or a holiday-themed design. With a few materials, anyone can create special arrangements for their home.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where to place the floral design. Pick the entryway of your home to make a statement, or an end table in the living room as a focal point. Select the kitchen table for a seasonal centerpiece during meals. You may even carry the theme throughout your home with a small arrangement in the bathroom.

Choose your flowers and greenery. Pick winter jasmine, narcissus and sunflowers for the golden colors. Select red flowers, such as carnations, amaryllis, mambo or euphorbia. Mix in orange flower, like mums, nasturtium or lilies. Add greenery to your display with hemlock, ivy, senecio or mahonia.

    • 3

Prepare the flowers. Cut the stems under warm running water and place them into a bucket filled with water and plant food. Vary the heights of the flowers for an interesting design.

    • 4

Find an unusual container to use for a fall design. Use a block of florist's foam to stabilize flowers, greenery or twigs. Carve the top off a pumpkin, hollow it out and insert a block of florist's foam. Arrange your flowers in the foam block. Or place florist's foam inside a wicker basket and arrange a colorful mix of flowers inside it. You may choose a burnt orange tin pail and add greenery and flowers.

Create a holiday-themed display. For Halloween include plastic spiders and netting resembling a spider web. Design a Thanksgiving floral arrangement with the addition of gourds, tiny pumpkins or acorns surrounding a flower display.

    • 6

Design a vase arrangement by dropping acorns and tiny pumpkins into a clear vase and filling it with water. Place the tallest flowers in the center of the container and decrease flower heights as you reach the edges of the vase. Stand the hemlock leaves behind the flowers and allow the ivy to trail over the container's edge. Add a ribbon to the neck of the vase and create a large bow.

Prepare a low-lying arrangement. Place a soaked florist's foam block into a rectangular tin, leaving space on one end. Fit three different height pillar candles into the space. Arrange flowers to the height of the tallest candle in the back row of the tin. Place the shorter flowers to the front. Add greenery and place on your kitchen table. Light the candles during meal times.
