How to Plant Bulbs As Gifts

Gifting flower bulbs to a gardener is always welcome, but giving a growing, planted bulb to anyone is special. You will need to plant your flower bulb at least a month before you intend to give it to someone so it has time to root and begin growing. It is not always necessary to plant the bulb far enough in advance for it to be blooming, but sometimes letting the recipient enjoy the progress of the development of the bloom extends the gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean, thoroughly, an attractive glass container or vase. You can purchase inexpensive, attractive glass containers at dollar stores or thrift stores. The containers can be basically any shape and size.

    • 2

Fill the glass container with the glass rocks, marbles or pebbles to within 1 to 2 inches from the top of the container.

    • 3

Place your flower bulb on top of the glass rocks or pebbles so it sets upright and is in the center. The pointed end of the bulb should be pointed up, the flat, or broad end, of the bulb sets on the pebbles.

    • 4

Fill the glass container or vase with water to a level that only covers the very bottom of the bulb setting on the pebbles. Bulbs do not need to be grown in soil, water will do.

    • 5

Place your planted bulb in a sunny location, checking the water level daily. Within a few days you should notice roots developing, then greenery sprouting on the top of the bulb.
