Summer Grass Wreaths

Types

• A majority of summer grass wreaths are made form dried stalks of wheat. The base of the wheat wraps around a circular wreath base so that they feathery ends of the wheat create a spray around the outer rim of the wreath. Beach grass and star grass also are options for crafting spray-style wreaths. More colorful green wreaths made from moss or even bright green turf are a bright option, but they don't feature the same dramatic shape as the spray-style wreaths.

Uses

• Summer grass wreaths are primarily indoor decor options. They brighten up an entryway, draw attention to a dramatic fireplace or replace traditional framed pictures in bedrooms and dining rooms. If a summer wreath is made from preserved grasses, then the wreath also is suitable for outdoor use on porches or along railings. Smaller versions of grass wreaths may be used as decorative hair pieces. The smaller wreaths are made of woven grasses and adorned with small flowers to create a wearable wreath suitable for a summer wedding or garden-themed party.

Floral Accents

• A well-made summer grass wreath is an elegant design piece on its own, but incorporating several types of grasses or additional flowers into the wreath provides a pleasing color and textural contrast. Woody sprigs of bright red berries are an unexpected contrast to neutral gold wheat or bright green turf grass. For a more subtle, elegant look, opt for dried flowers, such as lavender or eucalyptus, which also provide a pleasant flowery aroma. If you prefer fresh flowers, choose flowers with long, flexible stems, such as daisies, but know that the buds will not last very long without access to water.

Non-floral Accessories

• Flowers aren't the only accessory to dress up a summer grass wreath. Wide, colorful ribbon can finish off a wreath a bow. If you have a beach theme in your home, sea shells carry the design scheme through the grass wreath. For an even more dramatic impact, opt for dried sand dollars or sea stars to decorate your simple beach grass wreath. To keep with the natural theme of the wreath, consider adding a small imitation bird nest made from small twigs in the center or along the brim of the wreath; two hand-painted river stones in the center of the nest resemble tiny eggs.
