How to Make Wreaths with Fir Trees

Traditional evergreen wreaths hung on the front door or over a lighted window add country charm to your home. Made from the boughs of balsam fir, the circular shape represents eternity, while the evergreens represent everlasting life. For Christians, evergreen wreaths are an important part of the Christmas celebration. Many New England women still take pride in harvesting fresh "tips" from nearby forests and working them into a wreath. For those who do not make their own, there is always an ample supply for sale along country roadsides by late November.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the wreath ring on a flat work surface, such as a table or work bench. Allow 6 to 8 inches of work area on all sides of the wreath. Once you begin adding evergreens the width of the wreath expands quickly.

    • 2

Twist the loose end of the wreath wire to the top of the wreath ring to secure it. Place the spool of wire in the middle of the ring so that the wire comes off the top of the spool.

    • 3

Gather three or four 8-inch sprigs of evergreens. Position the evergreens on top of the wreath ring so the cut stems point to the right.

    • 4

Hold the evergreens in place with your left hand. Grasp the spool of wire, allowing the wire to rest loosely between your fingers.

    • 5

Lift the ring slightly with your left hand, while holding the evergreens snugly against the ring.

    • 6

Wrap the wire up over the stems of the evergreen tips about two inches from the end. Drop the spool of wire, allowing it to roll under the ring. The spool should now rest back in the center of the ring. Repeat the procedure and pull the wire snugly against the stems.

    • 7

Grasp the wreath at the top, and flip the entire wreath so the evergreens now rest directly in front of you on the table, with the spool of wire between you and the wreath.

    • 8

Gather another bundle of evergreen tips and place them on top of the first bundle, aligning the ends of the stems. This bundle will begin the back side of the wreath.

    • 9

Repeat the procedure for wiring the tips to the wreath ring. Flip the wreath back to the original position.

    • 10

Gather a bundle of evergreens and place them so the stems are 3 to 4 inches to the right of the first bundle. Wire in place following the same procedure.

    • 11

Flip the wreath, match the ends of the stems in the new bundle and wire them in place. Continue flipping and wiring until you reach the end of the wreath ring.

    • 12

Tuck the stems of the last bundle of evergreens under the evergreen boughs of the first bundle to hide the stems. Repeat on the opposite side.

    • 13

Loop the wire over the stems, allowing it to form a loose loop. Feed the spool through the loop and pull tightly until the wire snaps. This ties off the wire and finishes the wreath.

    • 14

Cut a 10-inch section of the wreath wire. Slip the wire through the center of the wreath and twist the ends together securely to form a loop for hanging. Adjust to the desired length.
