How to Make Lamb's Ear Wreaths

Beloved by children for their soft, fuzzy feel, lamb's ears (Stachys byzantina) are a favorite garden perennial. They are an excellent choice to use in creating wreaths, as the silvery-sage color and soft purple blooms create a lush, velvety appearance. Lamb's ear wreaths hold their shape and color as they dry, allowing you to enjoy the wreath for many years. With leaves that are pliable when fresh, creating a lamb's ear bow adds the perfect finishing touch.

  • Wire, 20-gauge

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of 20-gauge wire 8 to 10 inches long with the wire cutters. Bend the wire into a U-shape.

    • 2

Insert each end of the wire through the wreath form, with the U at the back. Bend the U up at the back of the form to form a hanger.

    • 3

Use the needle nose pliers to bend the protruding ends of the wire at right angles to the wreath form to hold the hangar in place.

    • 4

Cut lamb's ear stems, with and without blooms, that are 6 to 8 inches long.

    • 5

Gather six to eight stems into a cluster. Create clusters using stems without blooms as filler and placing stems with blooms toward the front and center. Strip the last set of leaves from the stems, if necessary, leaving at least 1 inch of exposed stem.

    • 6

Wrap the ends of the stems tightly together with florist's tape. Trim any uneven stem ends with a scissors. Continue creating clusters.

    • 7

Place the wreath form, hanger side down, on a work surface. Working on the section of wreath form directly in front of you, lay the first cluster of lamb's ear on the top surface of the form. Insert a florist pin or two through the stem area of the cluster to secure the cluster to the form.

    • 8

Place the next assembled cluster of lamb's ear on the inside curve of the wreath form, alongside the first cluster. Stagger the ends of the clusters to avoid bunching all the stem ends in one place. Secure this cluster with a florist pin.

    • 9

Add a third cluster on the outside edge of the wreath form, alongside the first cluster, staggering the stem ends. Secure with florist pins.

    • 10

Rotate the wreath so the secured stems of previous clusters are in front of you. Overlap the florist's tape-bound stems of the previously secured clusters with the midsection of the next cluster of material, completely covering the florist tape and cut ends of attached lamb's ear clusters. Repeat the process of securing a cluster on the top, inside and outside of the wreath form.

    • 11

Begin to form a bow by folding two large lamb's ears leaves in half end-to-end. Hold them point-to-point, overlapping slightly, forming loops.

    • 12

Place the stem ends of two additional leaves behind the loops, angled down to create the tails of the bow.

    • 13

Fold the last leaf in half to make a narrow strip. Wrap the folded leaf around the center of the other four leaves, overlapping the ends at the back.

    • 14

Insert the round toothpick horizontally through the back of the leaves to hold the bow together. Attach the lamb's ear bow to the wreath in the desired location with a floral pin, concealing the pin by inserting it through the loop of the bow.

    • 15

Hang the wreath and make any final adjustments by inserting and pinning additional small clusters of material to conceal any bare spots.
