Proper Care of Flowers

Flowers of all shapes, sizes, textures and scents require different levels of care. Depending on whether they are cut for display in a vase or growing in your garden landscape, the care you give them varies.
  1. Potted Flowers

    • Potted flowers benefit from sitting on windowsills for sunlight.

Potted flowers require varying nutrients, substrate and light. For example, a potted orchid requires well-drained peat as a substrate, rather than the potting soil preferred by most container-grown plants. Keep potted plants on a windowsill so they can get needed sunlight, or use a grow light.

    Landscape Flowers

    • Outdoor rose bushes beautify your environment.

Flowers that grow directly in the soil around your property must be cared for depending on their individual needs. Sunflowers require direct sunlight and dry soil, while climbing rose bushes of differing types require moderate moisture and partial shade.

    Cut Flowers

    • Cut flowers last longer when kept cool.

Cut flowers should be kept in cool water while sitting in vases. The cool water keeps the capillaries within the stem restricted, which slows down the wilting process. Removing bruised petals and foliage from the cut-flower arrangement keeps it looking nice as well.
