How to Make a Wishing Well Flower Holder from a Coffee Can

Don't throw away that empty coffee can. Use it to spruce up your place by turning it into a decorative flower holder. You can use it for artificial or real flowers. Perhaps best of all, you could use it as a project to spend time with children. Just cut the wood ahead of time to make it a safe children's project.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any paper labels from the coffee can. Measure the height and circumference. Cut white or gray craft foam to fit around the can. For a 33.9 oz. can, the dimensions are 6 3/8 inches tall and 19 1/2 inches round. Glue the foam into place and let it dry.

    • 2

Cut rust craft foam into small rectangles. These are your bricks; they're 1-by-1/2 inch for a 33.9 oz. can. Glue a line of bricks around the base of the can, leaving a narrow bit of the white or gray showing in between as mortar. Stagger the next row so that the bricks form a pattern, with a narrow strip of mortar between the rows. Continue up the can, adding rows in offset formation to continue the pattern. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 3

Cut two 12 inch lengths of dowel. Place them on opposite sides of the can as uprights. Attach with glue and tie yarn or string around the can and dowels to hold the dowels in place until dry.

    • 4

Cut three 7-inch lengths of dowel. Position one of them horizontally between the uprights at the top, creating an inverted U-shape. Trim to fit, if needed, and glue in place. Hold the joints tight with a loop of string or yarn around the two uprights until it dries.

    • 5

Place the remaining 7 inch dowels as crosspieces on the vertical supports. Position each one horizontally on the outside of the support, about an inch down from the top. Glue it in place and tie it with string or yarn until it is dry.

    • 6

Cut a 7-by-8 inch rectangle of tan craft foam. Use a colored pencil to draw lines and wood grain on the foam across the 7 inch width, simulating the look of a wooden cover. Glue the rectangle over the top center support, allowing 4 inches to drape over either side. Tack the corners to the ends of the crosspieces with glue.

Position floral foam in the can and arrange the artificial flowers. For cut flowers, place a watertight container such as a jar or plastic canister within the can and arrange the flowers.
