How Long Amaryllis Blossoms Last in Floral Foam

Amaryllis are Hippeastrum bulbs that may be best known for forced blooming in winter. They feature large, bright, bold blossoms on tall stalks. As cut flowers, they add color and drama to arrangements. Like all cut flowers, their life span depends on many factors, but with proper care expect them to last five days or longer.
  1. Harvesting

    • Morning is the best time to cut your own amaryllis, when the blossoms and stems are firm and hydrated. Harvest amaryllis when most of the blossoms are still tightly budded. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle about an inch above the base and immediately transfer to a bucket of water. Cutting on an angle improves water intake by increasing the surface area of the stem that is exposed to water. Using a sharp knife or garden clippers helps avoid crushing the stem, which can result from using regular scissors.

    Arranging

    • Amaryllis features a tall, hollow stem that is susceptible to crushing, bending and wilting. Addressing stem support is an important way to increase the life span of your cut amaryllis. Holding the flower upside down, pour clean water into the stem. Block the stem opening with a piece of cotton ball or cover the end of the filled stem with your finger to hold the water in as you turn it right-side-up and quickly insert it into your floral foam. Prepare the floral foam beforehand by saturating it with clean water mixed with a commercial fresh flower food. Insert a cane into the stem to hold it upright.

    Watering & Feeding

    • Even though you are using floral foam, keep plenty of water in the container, well above the level of the foam. The Brooklyn Botanical Garden recommends using cold water for bulb flowers. If the water becomes dirty, refresh it with clean water, clean the container and add more plant food according to the product directions. Fresh flower food kills bacteria, feeds the flowers and acidifies the water to keep your flowers going longer.

    Tips

    • Check on your amaryllis daily and do any needed maintenance to keep the blossoms alive as long as possible. Keep the water level high and make sure it is clean and free of debris that can encourage bacterial growth and a foul odor. Teleflora recommends re-cutting the stems every few days by removing them from the arrangement and cutting the stems at a 45-degree angle about 3/4 inch up the stem. Remove wilted blossoms.
