Vase Arrangement Ideas

Fresh flowers arranged in a decorative vase dress up a dining room table, windowsill, or other areas of your home that could use a little color. By taking a little time to appropriately arrange the flowers, you can give them a professionally designed look. The process doesn't require much effort and can be done by almost anybody interested in some basic floral arranging.
  1. Choosing A Vase Color

    • Select a vase that will complement the color of the flowers. Like any home decor element, you will not want to use colors that will appear harsh when placed next to on another. Also, when selecting the correct vase, consider other items or color schemes in the home. You may want to connect the color or the flowers and the home via a particular vase that will complement both. If you are unsure of which color to pick, a clear vase may be the easiest choice.

    Choosing A Vase Size

    • The vase should be appropriately sized to the number and density of the flowers that it will be holding. A vase that is too large will hold the flowers loosely. This will not make for a steady arrangement. Instead, the flowers will easily move about in the vase. A vase that is too small with crowd the flowers or not allow you to place all of the flowers within the vase. This can damage the stems of the flowers. It may also restrict you from making your complete arrangement if certain flowers cannot fit.

    Trimming the Stems

    • You don't necessarily need just one height for each flower within the vase. By trimming the stems to different heights, you can add depth to the arrangement. If some flowers are smaller than others, you may want to make their stems longer than the larger flowers so they remain visible in the arrangement. On the other hand, you may want to make some stems very short so that you can fill out the lower levels of the arrangement around the perimeter of the vase.

    Accessorize

    • Add some decoration besides flowers in the vase arrangement. Some of these options include ferns or tall blades of glass. In the water, you can add stones or marbles. Choose accessories that complement the color of the flowers, the vase and your home. Almost anything can be added to the arrangement. It's just a matter of the color scheme or decorative theme that you desire to create.
