How to Change Flower Colors With Dye

Plants give off water vapor in a process called transpiration. The water is released through pores known as stomata that are located on the leaves, flower petals and stems. Transpiration triggers roots to absorb more moisture to be distributed through the plants. One way of demonstrating this process is by placing white carnations in water mixed with dye. The flower petals change color within a day of absorbing the colored water.
