Methods of Flower Arrangements

Buying pre-made flower arrangements, whether they are silk or fresh, can be very pricey. By learning about various flower arranging techniques you can arrange flowers for any occasion to add style to your decor. Knowing about various methods of flower arranging also helps cut costs for special occasions such as weddings and anniversary parties. There are many different methods of flower arranging you can use on both fresh and silk flowers.
  1. Anchoring

    • Anchoring is a method used in various types of arrangements to help keep the flowers in place. To anchor flowers with a sturdy stem in a pot or vase, cut the stems on a diagonal so they can more easily poke into the foam. For flowers that have a slightly more flexible stem, tape a piece of wire or a toothpick along the bottom of the stem to make insertion into the foam easier. This can be used to create arrangements of various shapes and sizes; it is especially popular in an arrangement using radial insertion, in which the stem insertion is in the same approximate place in the foam, but each piece is placed in a different angle so the plants have a fanned out appearance at the top.

    Binding

    • Binding is a flower arrangement method that is commonly used in arrangements in glass vases and in bouquets. Binding is simply tying the arrangement together at some point along the stem of the plants. If the stem of the plants will be seen use a matching green wire or other material so the binding is not noticeable. Binding flowers to be arranged in a glass vase gives a more professional look for you arrangement.

    Collaring

    • Collaring is a method of flower arranging in which the center pieces of the arrangement are surrounded by one or two collars of other plants. For example, if you have a center arrangement of orchids, surround them with another small flower and then a leafy green plant. This will give a rounder, more complete look to your arrangement and make your center flowers really pop.

    Spiraling

    • Spiraling is a flower arranging method that is best used on taller flowers and plants with long stems. To make a spiraled arrangement, anchor the flowers or plants that you want to be the main attraction. Then anchor a more vine-like and flexible plant, and wrap it around your center plant until it reaches the top. This creates a very artistic and ornate look to your arrangement.
