DIY Sunflower Bouquet

Big, bright sunflowers make a bold statement in any form of decoration. Whether you use your bouquet in a wedding or in your home as a centerpiece, the golden flowers will likely be the first things to draw anyone's eyes. These flowers are generally cheap and easy to turn into bouquets, but you must make sure you choose flowers with long, sturdy stems that are free of bugs and pollen so that your bouquet will remain striking for as long as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather sunflowers that do not produce pollen, have been freshly picked, and don't have wilted petals or leaves. Make sure to choose stems that are sturdy and 1 foot or more in length.

    • 2

Cut approximately 1 inch from the bottom of each stem with pruners. Strip all of the leaves below the top three to five leaves from each stem to make sure it's easy to group the stems together. Leaving the top leaves provides a bit of greenery for the flowers to be nestled in and adds body to the bouquet.

    • 3

Mix 1 tbsp. of floral food into a vase of water. Place the sunflowers into the vase and keep them in cool temperatures for approximately one hour to hydrate.

    • 4

Remove the flowers from the water and dab their stems with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture. Spread the flowers out side by side and pick up the three with the longest stems.

    • 5

Hold the three flowers with the longest stems and arrange them so that each flower is facing in a different direction. Add the rest of the flowers to the bouquet in your hand and make sure to keep their faces pointing away from the original three.

Wrap a rubber band around the stems approximately 8 inches below the blooms. Then wrap a ribbon of your choice around the stems to cover the rubber band.
