Marbles in Flower Arrangements

Clear Marbles

• The most common marble used for flower arrangements is clear. Specialty marbles are made in a kidney shape with a bottom that is somewhat flat while the top is curved. These marbles look nearly invisible in a clear vase and they allow the stems of the flower arrangement to take center stage. The stems are positioned among the marbles so that the weight of the marbles keeps the stems in the desired position.

Transparent Colored Marbles

• Transparent colored marbles allow the flower designer to coordinate the marble color with the flowers. This creates a unique and interesting floral arrangement, particularly if the arrangement is large and the vase is more readily within view of a person dining. The added interest of the marble color allows the arrangement to be attractive at different levels.

Large Marbles

• Larger marbles are used in very tall and thin centerpiece vases. Marbles are carefully arranged when the vase is empty and stacked to look similar to bubbles. Often the marbles are both transparent and of varying sizes. The bottom of the vase is placed over a light source so that during the event the entire vase and its suspended marble bubbles are illuminated from below. The entire vase glows and the floral arrangement at the top may appear to explode like visual fireworks. Often small light sprays are designed into the flowers to further this effect.

Accent Color Marbles

• When a floral designer wants to add the WOW factor to an arrangement she selects a powerful accent color. Positioning the intensely colored marble at the bottom of a vase adds a touch of drama. The flower arrangement is likely to be equally stunning in all white or a strong contrasting color to the selected marble color. This combination works particularly well in contemporary and modern settings when the accent color of the event or home is powerful and strong.
