How to Sink a Red Rose in a Vase

You can sink a red rose in a vase to make a beautiful and inexpensive centerpiece for a wedding reception or other special event. These arrangements are often referred to as underwater arrangements or rose underwater arrangements because the rose will be submerged in water. This effect creates an illusion of a larger flower while allowing the water to magnify the brilliant color of the rose in the vase. Sinking a rose in a vase is more complicated than just sticking the rose underwater it requires a few tricks of the trade and some patience to get it just right.

Scissors
Small fishing weight or washer
Fishing line
Clear vase
Pebbles or glass gems
Distilled water

Instructions

  Prepare the rose by cutting its stem to about an inch long. Cut the end of the stem at a 45-degree angle so it will be able to suck up water.

  Attach a small fishing weight or washer to the rose's stem. Tie one end of a 1- to 3-inch-long piece of fishing line to the fishing weight or washer. Tie the other end of the fishing line to the rose's stem. Adjust the length of the fishing line depending on how high above the bottom of the vase you would like the rose to be.

  Pour a layer of pebbles or glass gems into the bottom of the vase. Fill the vase with distilled water about an inch from the vase's rim.

  Submerge the rose in the water. Dunk the rose into the water with your hand. Allow the petals to fill with water. Drop the fishing weight or washer into the bottom of the vase as you gently guide the rose down into the water. Arrange the pebbles or glass gems in the bottom of the vase to cover over the fishing weight or washer.
