Fall Floral Projects

The fall season offers many options for creating floral decorations. The rich colors and interesting textures allow you to combine a variety of materials into displays that last the entire season. You can use fresh, silk or dried flowers and foliage such as sunflowers, cattails, chrysanthemums, golden rod and oak leaves. Seasonal fruit adds an extra level of appeal.
  1. Cornucopia Arrangement

    • Cornucopias are a popular fall floral arrangement around Thanksgiving. A cornucopia is a horn-shaped basket that lies on its side and is adorned with layers of flowers, leaves and fruit that symbolize abundance. To create this look, arrange along the bottom of the basket some long flower and foliage stems such as oak leaves, wheat or nigella pods. Add layers of shorter stems of roses, yarrow or statice on top to create a layered look. Add grapes, pumpkins or small squash near the top of the opening for a bountiful appearance.

    Autumn Leaves Wreath

    • Wreaths made of natural, silk or dried autumn leaves give your home the rustic feel of the season. Use grapevine, straw or foam wreath forms as your base. Add a layer of moss to cover the wreath base or allow parts of the straw or grapevine to peek through the decorations. Adorn the wreath with layers of autumn oak, maple or birch leaves, poppy pods and pine cones. Finish the wreath with a coordinating ribbon to complete the fall look.

    Pumpkin Centerpiece

    • Spice up your dinner table with a fresh flower centerpiece arranged in a pumpkin. Choose a low, round pumpkin that sits flat on the table surface, cut the top off the pumpkin and hollow the center so it acts like a vase. Arrange a bouquet of fresh cut flowers and greenery such as roses, helichrysum, chrysanthemums, aster, globe amaranth, heather, eucalyptus or lavender in the pumpkin. You can use floral foam in the center of the pumpkin or a grid of waterproof, clear floral tape across the top to hold and separate the stems. Interesting squashes make fun floral containers in lieu of pumpkins as well.

    Rustic Pan Arrangement

    • Instead of throwing away those old metal baking pans and gelatin molds, turn them into floral containers. Use dried or silk roses, cockscomb, or sunflowers in hues of yellow, orange and red to create a seasonal arrangement that is lovely for both home and as a gift. Fill the container with dry floral foam to within one inch of the rim and cover with a thin layer of moss. Place the flowers in the container so that they sit with sides touching. You can form a pattern of colors or randomly scatter the colors across the container. The flowers should extend approximately one inch above the top of the pan. This arrangement also works with thin blade grasses, wheat and nigella pods.
