How to Use Fern Fronds

Ferns are plentiful, nonflowering plants found in tropical and temperate regions. There are over 10,400 species of fern and each varies in morphology, adding a different texture and lush color to the understory. You can bring this same natural beauty into your home by incorporating fern fronds in your design plan. Use potted, fresh-cut or dried plants. Potted and fresh plants offer the advantage of richer colors, flexible fronds and a mild scent; however, dried ferns offer greater longevity.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a potted fern on an end table behind a sofa. Set the plant such that it receives ample shade and does not interfere with the activities in the room.

    • 2

Display fresh fern fronds in a vase with water in lieu of or in addition to flowers. Cut the fronds short and use them as part of a centerpiece.

    • 3

Dry and press fern leaves between the pages of a book. Or put the fern within the pages of a phone book. Place additional weigh on top of the book. Wait two weeks to retrieve the dried fern. Place the fern on a colored photo mat and frame it. Hang the framed frond in a living room or sunroom.

    • 4

Lay a flat frond on a level table. Lay a sheet of medium- or light-weight paper on top of the fern. Rub the side of a crayon, pencil or charcoal across the leaf to make a rubbing. Hang the rubbing as is, or frame it and display it formally.
