How to Make a Dodecahedron Flower Ball

Create something unique and unexpected with this dodecahedron flower ball. A dodecahedron is a 12-sided shape, and can be made of different materials. Depending on how the ball will be displayed or how long it will be on display will help to decide what materials to choose. The project detailed here is for a paper dodecahedron that is covered with silk flowers. A ribbon is added to hang the ball for display. All materials are available at craft and hobby stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw 12 circles with the compass. You can make the circles any size you like, depending on the size ball you need. A 5 1/2-inch diameter circle is used here.

    • 2

Use the ruler and pencil to make a pentagon inside the circles. A pentagon is a five-sided figure, with each side being equal in length. For the 5 1/2-inch circle, you will be making lines that are about 3 inches in length. Ensure each one of the points on the pentagon touches the outside edge of the circle.

    • 3

Cut out the circles with the scissors or the craft knife. While the craft knife gives a cleaner edge, the edges are not going to show, so use whatever is easiest for you. Trace the lines of the pentagon with the tip of the scissors or the craft knife -- but don't cut all the way through. This technique is called scoring, and it will help you fold the edges in the next step.

    • 4

Turn the circles over so that the scored lines are facing down. Now bend the edges up along the scored lines. Do this to all of the circles. When finished, each circle will resemble a five-sided tray.

    • 5

Start assembling the dodecahedron. This will be done in two parts, each part creating half of a globe. Place one of the circles on a work surface so that the folded edges are up. Take another circle and glue one of its folded edges to one of the edges on the first circle. Use the glue stick for this step. Repeat this four more times, until the first circle has another circle glued to each one of its edges.

    • 6

Glue the remaining six circles together in the same way the first ones were. You should now have two halves of a globe. Glue the halves together, also with the glue stick.

    • 7

Choose one side to be the top of your flower ball. Fold the ribbon in half and glue both ends to the top of the flower ball with the hot glue. Take the flower heads off the stems, or cut them so they are close to flush on the back. Glue the flowers all over the ball with the hot glue. Hang the ball as desired.
