How to Make a Felt Sunflower

Making sunflowers with felt is a simple craft and the flowers can be used in your home or on personal items to add a primitive, garden or country motif. Felt is an apt cloth medium for easily crafting the many small petals of a sunflower, because you can snip intricate shapes without worrying that the edges will fray. Stack three disks of felt that increase in size to create a three dimensional sunflower that will brighten and bring attention to the area where you've used it. You can make your felt sunflower in under an hour and be ready to turn it into a magnet, brooch, clothing patch or other embellishment.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your brown felt on a flat surface. Select a glass or mug to use as your template for the center of the sunflower. Place the glass over the brown felt and trace around it. Cut out the circle of felt along the traced lines.

    • 2

Repeat Step 1 to trace the outline of a bowl over the gold felt and the outline of a small plate (which should be larger than the bowl) onto the yellow felt. Cut out your pieces on the lines.

    • 3

Cut around the edges of your gold and yellow felt circles working inward to give the appearance of flower petals. The edges can be simply scalloped, or cut into thin petals with pointed tips. Leave an area the size of your brown circle in the center of each circle uncut.

    • 4

Trace the outline of two tear-shaped leaves onto your green fabric freehand, making each leaf about as long as the bowl is wide. Cut out the leaves along your lines.

    • 5

Slip the green leaves behind the yellow felt so the pointed ends stick out. The leaves can be next to one another or peeking out from behind the yellow on opposite sides. Hand stitch the leaves to the yellow felt working as close to the center of the yellow felt as possible.

    • 6

Center the gold felt piece over the yellow to cover the stitching from the leaves. Hand stitch through the center of the gold felt to attach it to the yellow, catching the leaves in the stitching where they all align.

    • 7

Layer the brown circle centered over the gold portion. Stitch the circle to all of the other layers of the flower working in a circle about a 1/4-inch from the edge of the brown felt. Keep the size and spacing of each stitch as uniform as possible for a cleaner finished look.
