Oriental Flower Designs to Make

Oriental floral design, particularly Japanese flower design, embraces the virtues of flowers in their natural state. Each flower, color and composition is thought to embody a male or female personality. Asian arrangements focus on a central flower arrangement that is made without artificial bending or cutting of the plants. Bunches of foliage surround the arrangement on either side to give balance to the design.
  1. Dragon's Layer

    • Fill a small, low tray with soaked floral foam and cover it with moss. Place some small sword ferns around the outside of the tray. Add a spindly branch to the tray toward one side with a couple of tall pieces of foliage around it to add height to the arrangement. Place a couple of dramatic flower buds such as stargazers around the branch. Balance out the height of the branch by adding purple dendrobium orchids into the foam at a low angle so that they are perpendicular to the branch.

    Right Angle Design

    • Fill a square vase with soaked floral foam and cover it with moss. Place ivy short ivy leaves around the floral foam to hid it. Add a large twig in the side of the foam so that it points out at a right angle to the vase. Add various green foliage around the twig to increase the right angle. Place short, bright flowers such as green spider mums to the center of the arrangement. Finish the right angle with some bright purple dendrobium orchids stuck in the side of the arrangement.

    Water Garden Arrangement

    • Use an Asian inspired pond and fill one side with rocks and the other with soaked floral foam. Cover the foam with moss. Stick several tall branches, such as magnolia, into the foam and add a few of stems of liatris in varying heights. Add two tall pieces of foliage, such as foxtail or geranium to fill out the arrangement. Add a few varieties of flowers around the bottom of the arrangement such as yellow daisies and green spider mums.

    Bamboo Arrangement

    • Place a piece of floral foam into a small, Asian inspired bowl. Stick five ivy leaves into the soaked foam to completely cover it. Cut a piece of quince to around 1-foot long and stick it into the center of the foam. Insert a few pieces of bamboo stalks into the arrangement with shorter stalks in the front and longer stalks in the back. Add a couple of iris flowers the same height as the bamboo. Place a short bud of anthurium in the front of the arrangement. Add a few short pieces of bamboo leaves around the entire arrangement.

    Floating Bubble Bowl

    • Fill a bubble bowl with about 3 inches of water. Take a plant frog, cover it with bamboo leaves and place it in the bottom bowl. Pull snow berries off the stem and drop them into the water so that they float. Cut off the bud of 2 large flowers, such as roses and attach them to the frog. Cut another rose with a 3-inch stem and stab it into the center of the frog.

    Quince Design

    • Begin with a large, oriental vase. Place a stalk of quince or another branch in the center of the vase. Add a few large leaves of ginger around the bottom and a tall stalk or nandina. Cut a few shorter stems of a bright flower, such as spray roses and add them around the bottom of the vase so that they lie on top of the ginger. Add a few tall stalks of papyrus to accent the quince and tie the arrangement together.
