How to Change Levels With a Skirting Board

Skirting boards, or baseboards as they are also commonly known, are panels made out of wood or plastic that are placed all along the bottom of the walls of many homes. In addition to protecting walls from scuffs and hiding the small gaps between floors and walls, skirting boards also create a sense of fluidity from one room to another. To create a truly unifying appearance, it is important to make sure that the skirting boards remain even and level with one another throughout the entire home.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the flooring for the installation of the skirting boards. Carpet should be removed and tile or hardwood floors should be laid down before installing skirting boards.

    • 2

Follow the installation instructions and install the skirting boards along the walls of the area that will be carpeted.

    • 3

Measure the difference between the uncarpeted floor and the top of the tile or hardwood flooring with the measuring tape. This will be the amount that you will remove from the bottom of the skirting boards that will be installed along the walls of the area that contains the tile or hardwood flooring.

    • 4

Trim the bottom off the skirting boards with a miter saw. This will make it so that the top of the skirting boards will be level as they transition from one flooring area to another.

    • 5

Install the skirting boards along the walls of the area that contains the tile or hardwood flooring.

    • 6

Follow the installation instructions to lay down the carpeting. This will complete the project and disguise any minute discrepancies between the levels of the skirting boards.
