Creative Ways to Mark Carpeting

Temporarily marking your home's carpet makes it a fun and educational play area for children. Instead of using substances such as paint and markers to mark the carpet, use different types of tape as a safe, flexible alternative. When you're done, pull the tape up and restore the carpet back to normal.
  1. Room Divider

    • A significant challenge to having two children sleep in one bedroom is giving each child his space. Sending children to opposite sides of the room can work sometimes, but allowing your children to mark the carpet on their side will give them a fun way to enjoy their area. Use colorful tape to create a line down the middle of the room and help the children write their names with tape on their respective sides of the line.

    Educational Games

    • Simple, homemade games can often be a suitable way for children to learn. Instead of buying an educational area rug, mark your carpet with letters and numbers for children who are learning the alphabet and basic arithmetic to play a scavenger hunt-like game. Name one letter of the alphabet and ask the children to find the letter and stand on it. For a child learning math, ask a question involving simple addition of subtraction and encourage the child to run to the number representing the answer.

    Fun Games

    • Long periods of inclement weather can prevent kids from playing outside and leave them with an abundance of energy. Mark the carpet in your home in creative ways to create kids' games. Use colorful tape to mark lines and numbers to lay out a hopscotch grid or make a long, winding path of parallel tape lines to give kids a roadway to follow with their toy cars.

    Abstract Designs

    • Marking your carpet in a creative way doesn't have to always be with your children in mind. To give a rec room an eye-catching appearance, use white or colored tape to create several different sizes of the squares or other shapes on the carpet. If you like a certain style of lined wallpaper, recreate it temporarily on your carpet.
