How to Break Up High Ceilings

A high ceiling can add drama to a room and make the space feel open and airy. However, the high ceilings can also make the room feel uninviting and dwarf the furniture and decor. Break up high ceilings with colors or materials that complement the style and colors in the room. Making the ceiling appear lower will create a comfortable and inviting room that won't feel sterile.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the ceiling a darker, richer color than the walls to create a warm and inviting room. Alternatively, paint a grid or mural, such as squares or a cloud scene, on the ceiling. Select a design and colors that complement the decor in the room.

For an elegant look, install faux beams across the ceiling, going in one direction and evenly spaced. For a rustic look, install a series of faux beams in a design, such as a triangular shape, to look like framework. To install the beams, use a stud finder to locate the ceiling joists or 2-by-4s that are attached to the ceiling. Then, use a drill and screws to attach the beams to the ceiling joists. Select screws that are long enough to go all the way through the beams and penetrate the joists.

Arrange decorative trim or molding in grids or shapes on the ceiling in a color that contrasts with the ceiling paint -- even a contrasting wood tone would work. If the room has crown molding, select molding that matches. Attach the molding to the ceiling with a hammer and small finishing nails at 12-inch intervals.

Add an oversized chandelier to the ceiling to create an intimate feel. If a chandelier won't work, consider dropped lights on sleek rods, especially if the room has a modern design. Install wall sconces higher than usual on the walls or use spotlights that shine down on artwork or pictures to draw attention away from the high ceiling. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing the lighting.
