Ideas for Rubber Roll Out Porch Flooring

Add color, design and safety features to a porch with a rubber floor. The porch of a home is often an area for outdoor enjoyment by the entire family, as well as friends and neighbors. With traffic coming in and out, dirt and debris become an issue, along with safety hazards due to wet flooring. With roll out rubber flooring, these issues become simple to solve. Use a few ideas to make the porch decorative, as well as soft and non-slip.
  1. Complete Covering

    • Use rubber roll out flooring to cover the entire area of the porch. Rubber flooring is available in a variety of colors. Select one to suit the color scheme of the house or surrounding area. These rolls are often available in different widths and may be cut to size, usually with only a craft or utility knife. Measure the length and width of the porch area. Roll out the rubber and cut it accordingly. Roll it back up, lay it on one end of the porch then unroll it. Rubber edging pieces are available at tile and carpet outlets to give a more aesthetic look to the raw edges of the rubber. For a more permanent fixture, use an epoxy sealant on the floor to hold the rubber in place. If left loose, the flooring can be rolled up and removed if it becomes excessively dirty or wet.

    Runners and Rugs

    • For the convenience of a non-slip floor without completely covering a porch, consider cutting runners or rugs from roll out rubber flooring. Cut a strip wide enough to walk on from the steps to the door or across the center of the porch. The flexible rubber can be formed and attached to the steps to make a non-slip walkway for family and guests or cut into small pieces to fit each step. Use rubber edging, available at carpet and flooring outlets, to make smooth edges.

    Decorative Shapes

    • A floor made from roll out rubber does not have to be plain in shape. While it may be square or rectangular due to the roll configuration, using a utility knife and a pattern can transform it into whimsical shapes. Roll out the rubber flooring and draw a shape, such as a flower, tree, triangle or an abstract design, with a piece of chalk. Cut around the line with a utility knife and position it on the porch to provide a decorative non-slip surface. Use epoxy glue to hold the shape in place or leave it loose to remove for cleaning or drying. Select a color of roll out rubber flooring to accentuate the design. For example, select red for a heart or blue for a flower.

    Paint

    • Whether you decide to cover the entire porch with roll out rubber flooring or only a portion of it, add additional color and style to the area with paint. Epoxy paint will adhere to the rubber and stand up to the elements and wear. Paint around the edges for only a small amount of accent or add stripes over the entire piece. Use stencils to make repeating shapes or create a mural on the floor.
