DIY Ceiling Speaker Enclosures

Hanging speaker enclosures from the ceiling is a great way to give your entertainment area adequate sound exposure, to control the distribution of sound, and to position the speakers behind the audience to give them a great surround experience. These enclosures are constructed with a rectangular frame that is held aloft by three metal chains connected to an eyebolt in the ceiling. The chains can be adjusted to any angle by hooking different links, positioning the sound direction. Additionally, these dimensions should be adjusted for the specific speaker, leaving a half-inch of space all around the speaker for optimum performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand two 3/4-by-8-by-20-inch plywood boards on their long, thin edges, parallel to each other about a foot apart to be the side boards of the enclosure. Press two plywood 3/4-by-8-by-12-inch boards against the ends of the side boards. Position 2-inch metal L-brackets within the frame, spaced every 4 inches between adjoining boards.

    • 2

Drill screw holes through the openings on the L-brackets. Attach the brackets to the sides of the enclosure with 3/4-inch wood screws.

    • 3

Position wire mesh on one open side of the frame and bend the mesh so that it fits inside the frame to a depth of 1 inch from the edges. Turn the frame upside down and staple the mesh to the frame, spacing the staples every 4 inches. Cut off any excess mesh.

    • 4

Drill a hole in each side board on the opposite side from the mesh. Place the holes about 3 inches from what will be the top of the enclosure. Drill another hole centered in the bottom board of the frame. Screw 1/2-inch eyebolts into each of these holes, tightening until the eyes of the eyebolts are even with the wood.

    • 5

Clip 3/4-inch carabiners to each eyehook. Attach a length of chain to each carabiner.

    • 6

Locate and mark a position in the ceiling where there is a joist. Drill into the joist and attach a 1/2-inch eyebolt. Clip a 3/4-inch carabiner to the eyebolt. Set the speaker in the enclosure and hang the other end of the three chains to the ceiling eyebolt, spaced so that the enclosure is angled toward the seating area.
