How to Build a Media Room Seating Platform

Putting a platform in the rear of a media room helps give the room the feeling of a theater or professional exhibition facility. This simple project can go a long way toward making a space feel special and unique. The platform raises the level of the floor by 6 1/4 inches, allowing the seating to have a raised effect, which improves both the appearance of the room and the view of those seated on the platform.

Instructions

    • 1

Evenly position three 1 1/2-by-5 1/2-by-93-inch-long boards on a working surface. Make them parallel to each other with their long, thin sides touching the working surface. Position two 1 1/2-by-5 1/2-by-48-inch side boards at either end of the long boards, perpendicular to them and pressed against them.

    • 2

Arrange the long boards so the ends of one are directly in the center of the two side boards and the two other long boards' ends are even with the ends of the side boards. Have the frame make an even rectangle with a board running through the center.

    • 3

Drill two holes through the side of each side board and into the end of each longer board, so there are 12 holes in all. Set 3-inch wood screws into each hole and tighten them securely with a drill.

    • 4

Set two 1 1/2-by-5 1/2-by-21 3/4-inch center support boards within the frame on each side of the center long board and perpendicular to it. Make these two boards touch the center long board and an outer long board with their ends and adjust them so they are in the center of the frame but a few inches from each other.

    • 5

Drill two holes through the center and outside long boards into the ends of the center support boards. Attach the center support boards with 3-inch wood screws drilled through the holes.

    • 6

Lower a 3/4-by-48-by-96-inch sheet of plywood on top of the frame. Adjust it so the frame is even around the edges with the plywood. Drill holes into the edge of the plywood and down into the frame every 12 inches. Put two holes through the middle of the plywood and into each of the center support boards and the center long board. Place 3-inch screws in all holes and tighten them securely.
