How to Stop a Pergo Floor From Warping

Pergo floors, a brand of laminate flooring meant to simulate the look of real hard wood, are prone to warping if they become too moist or don't have room to expand. You can stop your floors from warping by taking the necessary precautions before you install the floors, and by maintaining them properly once they are. If warping as already begun, the best thing you can do to prevent it from getting worse is eliminate moisture from touching the boards.

Instructions

Apply painter's tape or duct tape around the perimeter of the plastic sheet to affix it to a portion of the floor. Leave the taped sheet in tact for 72 hours. Place a dew point hygrometer underneath the plastic sheet and take a humidity reading. If the moisture is more than 80 percent, apply a plastic barrier or another subfloor as a buffer between the concrete and Pergo.

Wipe up liquid spills immediately with a cloth. The longer water or any wet substance sits on your Pergo floors, the greater the change the boards will begin to warp. Similarly, don't let the room in which you have Pergo floors become filled with steam or extremely humid. If you have Pergo floors in a bathroom, for instance, keep a window open during hot showers to reduce the level of humidity in the room.

Limit the use of water when you are mopping your floors. If you choose to use a traditional mop, wring out most of the excess water before you apply the mop to the floor. Attaching a damp cloth to the end of a Swiffer or other mopping tool will allow you to clean the Pergo floors without risking warping. If you must conduct heavier cleaning, do not use soap or detergent cleaners; Pergo recommends mixing 1 cup of vinegar per 1 gallon of water.

Leave a gap of 1/2 inch between your Pergo boards and the wall during the installation of your floor. This gives your flooring room to expand and retract with temperature and humidity changes, so it won't begin to warp. The baseboard can be used to hide the gap. If your floors are already warping and the gap was not added when you installed the flooring, remove the baseboards and cut 1/2 inch off the edge of the Pergo boards around the perimeter of the room.
