How to Remove Rug Dimples

There are few more frustrating things when moving furniture than to discover dimples and dents in the area where heavy furniture, chairs and other items have compressed the rug fibers. While the dimples will puff back up on their own over time with foot traffic and vacuuming, nothing screams “I just moved my furniture around” more than dents and dimples. Removing the dimples and erasing the evidence that a couch sat where your new coffee table is can be accomplished in a few hours.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Ice Cubes

    • 1

Place two ice cubes in each dimple and wait for the ice to melt completely.

    • 2

Soak up excess water with a dry towel by lightly dabbing the area; do not press down hard as that further compresses the rug fibers.

    • 3

Use the tines of a fork to fluff the wet fibers back up by gently lifting each fiber up with the fork. If you have a Berber or loop-fiber rug, be careful not to damage the loop by getting the tines of the fork stuck in the loop.

    Steam Iron

    • 4

Dampen a towel and wring out excess moisture. Place the damp towel over the dimple and turn an iron onto the steam setting.

    • 5

Pass the iron over the damp towel, pressing the steam button on the iron. Keep the iron constantly moving and do not allow the iron to come in direct contact with the rug at any time. Leave the towel on the dimple until it is dry.
