Do it Yourself Garage Flooring

Garage floors are known for being dirty, cold and unwelcoming. Reduce the noise, the dirt and the unattractiveness of your garage floor with garage mats. The mats come in long sections that you unroll into place and secure with double-sided tape. Find garage mats at local home improvement stores or garage specialty stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the concrete flooring thoroughly to remove as much dirt and grease as possible.

    • 2

Unroll the garage mats as soon as the floor is clean. Lay them out on your driveway in the sunshine so they flatten prior to installation. The heat of the sun reverse the curling that results from packaging.

    • 3

Review the garage mat you purchased to determine if it has an overlap edge. Mats that are larger than 9 feet in width have a smooth edge where the next mat should overlap. Mats less than 9-feet-wide butt up against each other with no overlapping.

    • 4

Lay the first garage mat in place, leaving an extra inch to ride up the garage walls.

    • 5

Lay a line of double-sided tape on the garage floor so the garage mat you just positioned covers half and and the next garage mat to be installed will cover the other half.

    • 6

Set the next mat into place. Pull back the seams on both garage mats to expose the tape. Peel off the protective backing on the double-stick tape and walk down the seam to press each mat firmly into the adhesive.

    • 7

Install all of the garage mats, leaving an inch on all sides of the garage. Let the garage mats rest for 72 hours so they stretch to their full size. You may walk on and park on the garage mats during this time.

    • 8

Take a sharp utility knife and trim away the excess garage mats at the edges of the floor after the72 hours is up. Tape the edges down with double-sided tape, if desired.
