Ideas for Concrete Floors

When it comes flooring materials, there are few as durable and budget-friendly as concrete. Yet, homeowners often shy away from concrete flooring because they assume that it must be a drab, gray surface without little charm or character. Fortunately, there are several ways to dress up a concrete floor so it gives any room an attractive, warm look that you will be proud to show off.
  1. Stained Concrete

    • One of the simplest ways to jazz up a plain concrete floor is to use stained concrete. There are two main types of concrete stain: acid stain and water-based acrylic stain. Acid stain imparts its color all the way through the concrete so there is no risk of peeling or chipping. However, it is available in limited colors, such as tan, terra cotta, brown and blue-green. For more options, you can mix several stains together to give the floor a more interesting look or use two coats of the same stain for a richer look. Water-based acrylic stain is available in a wider range of colors, including white, black and metallic shades. It does not react with the lime in the concrete, though, so it simply deposits its pigment in the concrete's open pores.

    Scored Concrete

    • For a highly decorative look, have your concrete floor scored with geometric patterns and shapes. The patterns are made by using a circular saw to create shallow cuts in the surface of the concrete. You can give the floor an even more unique look by using different colors of stain or paint to highlight the design. After scoring, a concrete floor should be sealed to preserve its appearance.

    Stenciled Concrete

    • Stencils are an ideal option for an existing concrete floor with a drab gray finish. Concrete stencils are available in a wide array of patterns and can be combined with concrete stains to create intricate designs that add character and elegance to a plain concrete floor. You can use stencils to create a faux rug for your floor or a faux brick or stone look. They can be used on new concrete floors or concrete overlays as well.

    Polished Concrete

    • If you prefer a glossy finish for your floor, polished concrete is an ideal option. It can actually provide the look of a waxed floor without the slippery surface. It does not require the same maintenance, either. You can polish a newly installed concrete floor or buff an existing surface to give it new life. When combined with a stain, polished concrete can make an elegant, sophisticated statement for your floor.
