Low Ceiling Basement Problems

Basements are places that often receive second billing. They're the afterthoughts in home design, thus less time is often spent on their design. Low ceilings are a common problem--however with a few simple tips you can easily add height to these spaces.
  1. Basement Lighting

    • Low ceilings create lighting problems, giving the overall space a cave-like feel. Solve this problem with recessed lighting and bright white ceilings. Wall sconces can be installed with the light directed at the ceiling to reflect off the light colored paint.

    Headroom

    • Many basement ceilings are higher in the middle but slope towards the wall, creating headroom problems for many people. The walls, therefore, are good places to install closets or shelving, as these areas aren't much use for walking around or standing.

    Windows and Wall Decor

    • A lack of natural light in a basement can be a problem if the room has low ceilings. If there are windows, use window coverings in light fabrics that will neither smother the light nor block natural sunlight. Additionally, wall décor is a challenge with low ceilings---many designers will display vertical pieces to draw the eye up, then hang them slightly lower than normal to fool the eye.
