A Comparison of Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo is a fast growing grass that is more durable and requires less maintanence than hardwood flooring. Bamboo is a renewable resource and due to its higher bio-mass, it converts more carbon dioxide into oxygen than a hardwood forest. Compare the different types of bamboo floors when deciding what to put in your home.
  1. Types

    • The grain of the bamboo floor depends on how the bamboo was cut and pressed. The canes can be cut into narrow strips then pressed into boards for a vertical grain direction. The bamboo can also be cut into strips horizontally which shows nodes of the bamboo.

    Features

    • Bamboo floors can be engineered to have a distressed look with a wavy effect throughout the planks. The core of this floor is solid bamboo and is a very durable product. These floors can also be a mix of woods in compressed layers, including a top layer of solid bamboo and a core layer of other woods such as teak or poplar.

    Color Options

    • There are several color options for bamboo flooring. The amount of traffic the floor will get should be a determining factor; darker colors work best in high traffic areas in order to hide scuffs or wear. Other color options are light natural tones with barely any stain and caramel-colored medium tones.
