How to Hide an Exposed Beam

While exposed beams can lend a rustic appeal to a room, this is not always true. In certain cases, an exposed beam proves to be an eyesore, whether it is cracked and unsightly or simply goes against someone's personal tastes. As an exposed beam likely provides important structural support, removal isn't always an option. Instead, you can try one of several methods to hide it.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the exposed beam with paint so it blends with the rest of the ceiling. This provides a solution for those who dislike the appearance of exposed wood. Use the same type of paint found on the ceiling.

    • 2

Hide the exposed beam by installing a layer of stone or tile over the wood. Cover the wood beam with a layer of mortar and press the stones or tiles into place. Faux stone panels provide a lightweight alternative to organic materials.

    • 3

Hide the exposed beam by creating a fabric ceiling. Cover the entire ceiling or just the area around the exposed beam. Measure the area and obtain a piece of fabric large enough to cover it. Staple the center of the fabric to the ceiling before moving on to the four corners. Create a bunched look or pull it tight depending on your preference.

Create a lower ceiling in the room by using the exposed beams as anchors for ceiling panels. Install each panel between the exposed beams until the whole area is covered.
