Decorative stenciling can be applied to an old or new floor. A temporary adhesive keeps the stencil in place. Apply the design with concrete-suitable paint or concrete stain over the stencil using a hand trowel, broom or sponge to achieve the look and design desired. The color will penetrate the cut out portions of the stencil to create the design. When the color is no longer sticky on top, remove the stencil. Use multiple stencils to achieve an intricate design on the floor. It must then be sealed. Follow instructions specific to each stain or sealant.
Pre-cut and custom-made stencils are available. Stencils can be used on concrete to create a border on the floor, a tile-like design, medallions or the appearance of an area rug. Businesses also use concrete stencils to put their logos on floors. The design must fit the floor area.
The first year, clean and reseal the stenciled floor. Repeat every two years after that. The coloring or stain manufacturer can recommend a product for cleaning the concrete. Mild soap and water can keep an interior concrete floor clean.
When stenciling the floor, wait until the adhesive is completely dry before removing the stencil. Waiting too long, however, may make it difficult. A polishing compound can restore the luster on a floor that has lost its shine.
