How to Hook up a Ceiling Fan With Black, Blue, White & Green Wires

Ceiling fan wire insulation is color-coded which enables installers to identify each wire and ensures they make the correct connections. Some ceiling fans have a lighting kit requiring additional wiring connections. The factory installs the necessary lighting wires on the fan. You must properly terminate the 14-3 grounded wiring for operating the fan, the light from the wall switch and the power supply wires to complete the electrical part of the fan installation. The work requires a few tools, materials and basic electrical circuit knowledge.

Things You'll Need

  • Voltage tester
  • Wire strippers

Instructions

    • 1

Check the fan circuit power supply is off. Tag or mark the breaker to avoid inadvertent energizing of the circuit.

    • 2

Test the tips of the black hot and white neutral power supply wires with a voltage tester to verify no power exists in the circuit.

    • 3

Strip 1/2-inch of insulation from each of the colored wires using wire strippers.

    • 4

Connect the green ground wire from the fan to the bare copper ground wire from the switch pigtail using a wire nut. Tighten the nut clockwise with your hand.

    • 5

Connect the white wire from the fan to the white neutral wire from the power supply with a wire nut. Ensure no part of the copper conductor is exposed below the nut.

    • 6

Connect the black wire from the fan to the black hot wire pigtail from the switch with a wire nut.

    • 7

Connect the blue wire from the fan to the red wire from the switch using a wire nut.

    • 8

Wrap each wire nut connection with electrical tape. Wind the tape clockwise in overlapping layers from the wire nut over the wires.

    • 9

Complete ceiling fan installation according to manufacturer's instructions.

    • 10

Restore electrical power to the fan circuit.
