Popular Hardwood Floor Colors

Changing the color of your hardwood floor has an immediate impact on the feel of the room. Lighter colors do show dirt, but also give the room a lighter feel. Darker colors have a dramatic look that will not show dirt as easily. Before picking a popular hardwood floor color, look at your own taste and style, including your furniture, and find a shade that complements your existing pieces.
  1. Bamboo Flooring

    • According to the Harrington College of Design, bamboo is a popular flooring trend. Bamboo is a sustainable resource because it grows back even after being cut, which makes it a favorite with those interested in green living. Bamboo also has a light color that looks very glossy when sealed and polished. The bamboo does have a tendency to give the room an Asian feel, but the Asian look is minimized when mixed with the right accessories.

    Distressed Hardwood

    • Harrington College of Design also lists distressed hardwood as one of the top floor trends from 2010. Designers create distressed flooring with wire brushes and metal scrapers, which give the floors a lived-in look. The floors are covered with multiple layers of dark stain before the distressing occurs. The brushes and other tools remove part of the stain, letting different layers of the flooring shine through. A clear coat or sealant protects the flooring, keeping the stain on the wood.

    Lighter Colors

    • PPG Wood Coatings describes lighter colors as popular wood floor colors. Business director Tom Irwin claims that homeowners are looking for shades that have a more natural feel and those that mimic true-life shades. Natural shades of off-white, cream, and sand are all favorites with homeowners. Irwin also claims that homeowners are looking for natural floors without any bleaching or dyes that tend to have a homemade look.

    Unusual Colors

    • PPG is also seeing a rise in more unusual colors that were previously unseen in home flooring. Metallic shades that have a slightly shiny surface and bright blues are also common. The blues have a cooler look that resembles the ocean and lightens up a room. Metallic shades are warmer and give the room a more dramatic feel. Irwin also sees an increase in bright yellow, turquoise, warm orange and rich shades of red. According to Irwin, homeowners are looking for ways to bring colors from around the world into their own homes.
