How to Do Bathroom Fan Wiring

A bathroom fan is a must for many. The small exhaust fan pulls air out of the room, removing moisture and preventing mold or mildew. Installing the vent and fan into the ceiling is the most time-consuming part of the process. Once it is in place, you must connect the wiring to the house in order for the fan to operate.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the house wiring into the hole at the top of the bathroom fan as you are installing the fan.

    • 2

Open the fan up in the bathroom by snapping off the outside cover.

    • 3

Unscrew the motor from the fan housing with a screwdriver and pull out the wiring plug. This allows you to get the metal plate that covers the wiring.

    • 4

Pull the house wires out where you can see them. You should have both a black and a white wire, and in some cases a green or copper one. The black wire is the live wire, and the white is the neutral one. If you have a copper or green wire, this is a grounding wire.

    • 5

Strip the tips off the house wires and the wires on the other end of the motor wire plug. Use wire strippers. Pinch the wire strippers down on the end of the wire and then pull to remove the coating.

    • 6

Twist like-colored wires together, and then screw on wire nuts to hold them. If you do not have a ground wire coming both from the house and the fan wires, then twist the one that you have around something metal, such as the screw that holds the metal plate over the wires.

    • 7

Push the wires back into the wire area and cover it back up with the plate. There should be a small hole at the edge to fit the motor wires into so that they extend out of the wiring area.

    • 8

Plug the wires back into the motor and screw the motor back in place. Snap the cover back on the fan.
