How to Install a Hampton Bay 54 Inch Sailwind Fan

The Hampton Bay 54-inch Sailwind Fan installs in the manner typical to most other ceiling fans and provides benefits in winter and summer months. Since hot air rises, during the winter months run your ceiling fan in a clockwise direction to push warm air up against the ceiling and then down the walls to recirculate warm air through the room. In the summer months, run the fan in a counter-clockwise direction to provide a circulatory breeze.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare to mount the ceiling fan by first turning off the power to the light at the breaker box. Turn on the light and continue shutting off breakers until the light goes off. When the light goes off that means you have found the correct breaker and shut down power to the light.

    • 2

Remove all components of the light fixture and disconnect it from the electrical box. At this point you should have three wires hanging down from the box. The black wire is the hot wire, the white wire is the neutral wire and the copper, uncovered wire is the ground.

    • 3

Run all three wires through the ceiling plate provided in the fan's installation kit and mount the ceiling plate flat up against the ceiling. The legs on each side of the ceiling plate should be facing down to the floor.

    • 4

Screw the ceiling plate into the electrical box using the screws provided in the fan's installation kit.

    • 5

Lift the fan motor up and support it so that the wires coming from the fan motor have enough slack for you to work with so you can connect them to the wires coming out of the ceiling.

    • 6

Connect the black wire from the fan motor and the black wire hanging from the ceiling together by twisting the exposed wire at the ends together. Twist a wire nut over the end. Repeat this procedure for the white wire and for the ground wire.

    • 7

Secure the motor canopy to the ceiling bracket with the screws provided in the fan's installation kit. Make sure the wiring is tucked neatly underneath the canopy and it is not pinched by the canopy's rim. The canopy rim should sit flat against the ceiling. Attach the fan blades.

Turn the breaker back on and test the fan to make sure it works at all speeds.
