How to Stretch Vinyl Laminate

Vinyl laminate flooring provides your home with a polished, up-to-date look. Installation is done by fitting large sheets of vinyl to your sub-floor and trimming away the excess around corners and door frames. Stretching your flooring will ensure that it does not have grooves or bubbles. These can pose tripping risks and are unsightly. Stretching vinyl laminate flooring is a crucial finishing step to any floor installation job.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your rolled vinyl flooring onto your prepared flooring surface, leaving equal distance between the roll and your wall on each side. The width of your roll will meet perfectly with your side walls. Pull your vinyl flooring sheet to the edges of the room where your wall and floor meet by unrolling it and pulling the ends to meet the wall. Repeat this step on the opposite side, unrolling it from the middle. You will be left with excess flooring that you will need to cut before you can complete installation. Mark off your cutting point with masking tape.

Cut your flooring at the taped off location. Use a box cutter or electric knife to make a straight cut across the length of your flooring. Roll your flooring back up, away from your floor edges. Since the laminate retains its shape from being rolled at the store, it will stay in place.

Apply flooring adhesive to the edge around your subflooring at the base of your walls, using a trowel. Spread your adhesive until you are left with a 7-inch wide band around the edge of your room on all sides.

    • 4

Unroll your vinyl flooring and lay it out as close to the sub-floor edges as possible. With a roller, spread your flooring sheet toward the walls in each direction, starting at the center. This stretches your floor surface, removing bubbles and kinks. Work from the middle of your floor, outward, securing the flooring to your adhesive with your roller.

Allow adhesive to dry for 24 to 48 hours before placing furniture in the room. Avoid walking on the floor surface until it is completely dry.
